Istanbul and London
Four years ago, I went to London and I witnessed some similarities between London and Istanbul, and I will compare these two important cities. London is the capital of the England and I think Istanbul is one of the most important cities like London. There are lots of similarities between these two cities. For example; they both have many important football clubs. Arsenal, Chelsea and West Ham United in London, and Galatasaray, Besiktas and Fenerbahce in Istanbul. These all teams have the same similarity that they won the League Cups. This was the first similarty between these two cities. (http://www.wikipedia.com),(http://www.footballmanager.com) Movies:“ Green street, the Football Factory”. Second similarity is that these two cities have museums and concept places. For example; Buckingham Palace is the official residence of Queen of the United Kingdom in London. Likewise Dolmabahçe Palace of the Sultan of the Ottoman Empire in Istanbul. What is more Hyde Park is visible in the center with Richmond Park to the south-west, these areas are the concept places in London and in Istanbul, there are concept areas; Park Orman, Hezervan, Kurucesme Arena. A famous museum in London Madame-Tussauds museum attracts many tourists like, AyaSofya Museum in Istanbul. Another similarty is transportion system in London city. There are buses, cabs and subway system which is the heart of London like Istanbul. Ship transportion system is another similarity between two cities. (http://www.wikipedia.com/london ) ,(http://www.wikipedia.com/istanbul ). Istanbul is the only city in the world built on continents. Bosphorus bridge, Golden Horn, Galata Bridge are important for Istanbul transportion like in London. The Millenium Bridge, infamously known as the Wobbly Bridge. Another important transportion system is airport. Istanbul has two major international airports, Sabihe Gökçen and Atatürk airport. London has five international airports. Heathrow is the most important airport for London. (http://www.wikipedia.com/london ) Another similarity is; Population. London is the most populated city in Europe. Official population is 7.5million people. Istanbul has 10million people as population. In conclusion, we have seen two cities and we know what’s better. I think, Istanbul is better than London. Napolion Bonaparta thought like me and once said this; “If the earth was a single state, Istanbul would be it’s capital.” (http://www.wikipedia.com )

HOMESCHOOLING AND FORMAL SCHOOLING

What do you know about differences between homeschooling and formal schooling? First of all, homeschooling which is given by parents is the education of children at home.Formal schooling is the education of children at school under the control of teachers.Formal schooling and homeschooling are totally different. There are 4 major differences between homeschooling and formal schooling. These are systematicity-lack of systematicity, formal-informal teaching, teachers and assessment.

Firstly, formal schooling is systematic ; however , homeschooling is not very systematic.Formal schooling is systematic education. Education is worthless without a system. According to Albert Einstein, as cited in Internet source-powerpoint (www.ed.wright.edu/~rhelms/Portfolio_Pages/PPT/edtwoten/multimedia/gpresent/The_Difference_in_Education_and_Schooling.ppt) “School is one location that education takes place.” But homeschooling doesn’t take a specific place except for home and it lacks systematicity. Therefore, at homeschooling parents should struggle to develop their children. In other words, homeschooling needs much more effort than formal schooling.

Secondly, formal schooling is formal; homeschooling is informal. For example, school has curriculum, administration, rules etc. but education at home has no curriculum or rules. “Homeschooling is an informal process of learning. Formal schooling is formal education in an institution developed fort his purpose. The purpose of schooling is to import formal knowledge in a variety of disciplines.” (http://www.lotsofessays.com/viewpaper/1689833.html). For example, at home schooling there are no administration, rules and teachers but at formal schooling there are teachers, rules and disciplines so at formal schooling children must obey the rules and they must respect their teachers and manager.

Thirdly, formal schooling requires a teacher; whereas, education at home doesn’t require a teacher. There must be someone for children’s educations. They can not educate themselves. In a school teachers are helpful in student’s learning, but in homeschooling parents tru to do this. However, parents are not as helpful as teachers in student’s learning.

According to the internet source-powerpoint
(www.ed.wright.edu/~rhelms/Portfolio_Pages/PPT/edtwoten/multimedia/gpresent/The_Difference_in_Education_and_Schooling.ppt) “In formal schooling teacher chooses to be in student’s best interest.” In other words, teachers identify student’s needs and interests before desinging school curriculum and they choose the most suitable thing for their students. “The parent who serves as teacher must take an exam or have bachelor’s degree before children can be educated at home. These requirements would ensure that the parent would have specified level of education before attempting to teach his or her own children.” (Introduction to Education Coursebook p.25) In other words, if children is educated at home, parents should hava high level of education to help their children.

Lastly, formal schooling has assessment; while, homeschooling has no assessment. “Throughout a country, … children do homework, take exams and so on.” (http://www.putclub.com/article.php?articleid=1530) In formal schooling children must take exams and they must do homework but in homeschooling children are free, they don’t need to take exams or to do homework.

In conclusion, As I said homeschooling and formal schooling are different. I mentioned 4 major differences. I believe that formal schooling is the most important factor in our life although homeschooling is also important and when I consider the differences, formal schooling is more effective in a child’s educational development. Because at formal schooling, children learn many things such as relationship, sharing something with friends in addition to lessons, and they become social beings.

DIFFERENCES BETWEEN VERBAL AND NONVERBAL COMMUNICATION

What do you know about the dıfferences between verbal and non verbal communıcatıon?
I encountered them in this semester. There are four important differences between verbal and
non verbal communıcatıon.And now,I want to explaın the four dıfferences that affect
interactıon positively and negatively while communicating.
The first difference between the two communıcatıons is the channel dıfference. Nonverbal communication occurs in two or more steps, whereas verbal communication occurs in one step.Verbal communication is what is heard by the listener however nonverbal communication includes our 5 senses for example touching, feeling…From the eyes of our students,we can feel whether they are communicating the message.(book of interpersonal communication)
The second difference is that the verbal communıcatıon has a beginning and end, while
nonverbal communıcatıon is on going. For example, “we say somethıng or write something,
and then we stop talkıng and writing.” “however,it is diffucult to stop nonverbal
communıcatıon.” “ We continuously use our posture and facial expressions.” (book of
interpersonal communication)
Another difference is that verbal communication is the words and expressions that we use
while communicating; on the other hand, nonverbal is our gesture and meanings.
The last difference is that non verbal communication is more reliable than verbal
communication in expressing true feelings (Andersen,1999).We can’t comment on them
reliably.Sometimes they deceive us.
In conclusion,I understand that the four important differences between verbal and
nonverbal communication are apparent. These communications are an essential part of our
lives. Thanks to these communications,we Express our feelings effectively.
As I said, I found 4 differences.As I searched,I learned many things about this topic.I
think, they are important to use in our daily life. For example, most of the time non verbal
communication, which is using your body language and gestures, support verbal
communication, it helps to transfer the message easily. It means that you make message more
meaningful.

TWO DIFFERENT PHILOSOPHIES
I learned about educational philosophies this semester in my Introduction to Educational Sciences course and they attracted me very much.I decided to search about different teaching philosophies “Idealism and Existentialism.”While I was searching differences,I encountered many differences such as role of teacher, teaching methods of teacher, the curriculum and what idealist and existentialist beliefs are.
Firstly,in idealism and existentialism, teacher’s roles are very different. They defend different things, different beliefs and different behaviours. They behave different from each other. In idealism “The truly idealistic teacher should have no discipline problems because he or she knows the content well, like to teach and knows the students.”(Introduction to Educational Sciences,Educ 101)Besides,in idealism, teachers are very strict in the classroom and he or she knows everything.Unlike idealism,in existentialism, the teacher gives an importance to individual choices and “The existential teacher is a free spirit who has no limitations in terms of dress and personal lifestyle. This teacher does as he or she chooses,in short, daring to be different at all times.”(Introduction to Educational Sciences,Educ 101)
Secondly, teaching strategies are another different point. The teachers are active in students’ learning in idealism and the teacher always asks questions. For example, “Teaching methods focus on handling ideas through lecture, discussion on Socratic dialogue.” (oregonstate.edu)On the other hand, existentialism is interested in different methods of teaching. For example, unlike idealism, the students are active in the classroom thanks to the teacher. The teacher is only a faciliator for students’ learning.
Then, curriculum of the two isn’t same. The curriculum of Idealism is stricter than curriculum of existentialism.Idealism,on the other hand,is a bit conservative. In idealism “the curricular emphasis is subject matter mind;literature, history, philosophy and religion”(oregonstate.edu)Unlike the idealism, the curriculum of existentialism is flexible. It gives an importance to arts and literature and it doesn’t have any certain rules about curriculum,so it is preferable.
Lastly,I want to explain what the principles of idealist and existentialist philosophies are. They differ in their belief. They evaluate “reality” differently from each other. For instance, “Idealist believes that reality is basically spirit or idea, that knowledge is gained through the mind, that value is measured by conformity to ideals”(nd.edu)However,existentialist’s evaluation of reality, knowledge and value aren’t as the same as the Idealist.According to the same internet source “The existentialist believes that reality is self-defined,that knowledge is gained through making personal decisions about what is true, and that value is measured by what an individual responsibly chooses as good.”
In conclusion,I examined these two educational philosophies and I found many differences.I think, none of them are good but if we get benefitial aspects of each of them, good and effective teaching philosophy may emerge and develop.

semester project

EMU and NEU

Before I came to Cyprus, I thought many times which one of these university is more better between Eastern Mediterranean University and Near East University which are Cyprus Universities and I did many research to decide.EMU was established in 1979 in Famagusta and NEU also was established in 1988 in Nicosia which is the capital of Cyprus. Now,I will compare these universities and I will mention about some differences between EMU and NEU.
The first difference is dormitories in campus. These are 12 dormitories in EMU and all of them have many features that are necessary for students such as a clima,tv,refrigator…etc. (www.emu.edu.tr/dormitories ,EMU STUDENT BOOK p.80-81) In contrast,NEU has got 13 dormitories and features of these dormitories are not better than EMU’s dormitories. (www.neu.edu.tr) The second difference is faculties of EMU and NEU.Eastern Mediterranean University has 7 faculties, 2 postgraduates and 3 instituties.(www.emu.edu.tr,EMU STUDENT BOOK p.18-19)On the other hand, there are 11 faculties , 3 postgraduates, with Faculty of Pharmacy, Faculty of Maritime studies, Faculty of Performing Education and Sports as different from EMU.(www.neu.edu.tr)

The third difference is the transportation system.Unlike EMU, NEU transportation system is free.Students use school buses freely to go home, dormitories, campus or wherever they want.(www.neu.edu.tr )But students of EMU have to pay fee except inside of campus.
Furthermore,EMU is in city centre,so students can go to campus by walking, but it isn’t like this in NEU, because NEU is far from city centre and students can’t go to campus by walking. (www.emu.edu.tr , www.neu.edu.tr )

And the last difference is fees.Fees are too much in NEU.All of the things are more expensive than Eastern Mediterranean University. For example, dormitory fees are between 965 Euro and 6615 Euro(www.neu.edu.tr ) while in EMU, these fees can change between 550 Dolar and 2500 Dolar (www.emu.edu.tr ,EMU STUDENT BOOK p.44)The other example is school fees.It can change between 4800 Dolar and 6000 Dolar, but in NEU, it is 4600 Euro.(www.neu.edu.tr )

In conclusion,as you see, there are some differences between EMU and NEU.Now, I am very happy to be a member of EMU.Research, which I did before I came here, helped met o choose one of them.I think, I chose the best one.
